Christmas Special: Short Story # 1

Lost Love Found

‘It’s the most beautiful time of the year…Lights fill the street spreading so much cheer…I should be playing in the winter snow… Imma be under the mistletoe…’

Charlotte just entered her room after decorating the Christmas tree and this particular song was playing on the radio. She stopped in her tracks and stood rooted to the spot. Some rather depressing memories was coming back to her and she was almost at the verge of crying.

This Christmas song was the song that he used to sing to her. This was also the song which they listened to when they strolled at the park at night and everywhere for that matter. This was their song.

He was her boyfriend, well, ex-boyfriend, since they broke up last month. The scene was still frustratingly fresh in her mind.

‘So what’ve you been doin’ these days huh?’ Charlotte asked with her face red in rage.

‘Told you, Sweetie Pie, I’ve been busy with the History project,’ replied Lucas calmly.

‘But I don’t think that’s the case,’ she said. Any seconds now, she was going to explode.

    ‘What do you mean?’

‘Oh, I don’t know. Maybe… CUDDLING UP WITH JESSICA CHASE?’

‘No, I didn’t! How can you say that?’ said Lucas hotly.

‘I saw you KISSING HER!’ yelled Charlotte.

     ‘I didn’t!’ defended Lucas.

‘You did! And don’t even bother to deny it! Saying that you two were doing the project together, but in actual fact, no, you’re getting so cosy together,’

‘I didn’t kiss her, alright? She kissed me!’

‘You should have pushed her away then, but you didn’t!’

     ‘I know I should have done that… but…’

‘But what? Is she too pretty for you to resist? Let’s just…just not see each other anymore, shall…shall we?’ said Charlotte, tears flowing down her cheeks as she ran away.

‘Charlotte! CHARLOTTE!’ Lucas called after her.

And this wasn’t the most miserable part yet. Turned out, Lucas didn’t even like Jessica but Jessica was crazy over him. In the end, Lucas rejected her and left her heartbroken.

Charlotte returned to her senses. She looked out the window and saw Christmas lights hanging on trees and houses, people talking and laughing and a kid putting a Santa hat on a snowman. Lucas used to put ridiculous hats on her head just to make her feel warm, but she’d tell him that they just made her looked silly...

Finally Charlotte couldn’t stand it anymore. She walked out of her room and headed off to Lucas’s house. Ready to apologise but didn’t really know what to expect. Would he take her back? Would he say he’s sorry too? Would he tell her that he missed her so? Millions of questions popped into her head and she was afraid what the answers were.

Charlotte knocked and Lucas’s father answered the door.

     ‘Oh hello, Miss Grace,’

‘Hi Mr Joseph, is Lucas home?’

‘Yes, please wait for a moment,’ he smiled and called his son.

But Lucas didn’t come out. He didn’t even respond.

Charlotte and Lucas’s father looked at each other awkwardly. Finally he said kindly-
‘Maybe he’s busy with something… Come again tomorrow,’

     ‘Ok, I will,’

Just when Charlotte started to walk home, an idea came to her. Maybe she could call him under his window? Or perhaps she could sit on a bench at the garden and wait for Lucas to come out? She chose the latter.

It was freezing cold and chilly wind was blowing. It seemed foolish to Charlotte now to be sitting out there, freezing herself to death. Nearly 10 minutes had passed and yet Lucas hadn’t showed himself. Oh well, maybe he was avoiding me, thought Charlotte.

     Just then-

‘What do you think you’re doing?’

Charlotte jumped. She turned around and to her astonishment, Lucas was standing there. Indeed he was.

‘Lucas…I…I was just waiting for you,’ replied Charlotte in a small voice.

‘And getting yourself sick in the process, I see,’ said Lucas with a tiny hint of amusement carefully concealed.

‘I’m so sorry, Lucas! I truly am! I shouldn’t…I just thought…’ Charlotte blurted out before she could stop herself.

Lucas held up his hand and said,

     ‘Drop it. I’m sorry I didn’t make myself plainer. I’m sorry I didn’t run after you…and I…’

The rest of his sentence was halted abruptly because Charlotte had leaped forward and thrown herself into his arms. She was crying uncontrollably on his shoulder.

‘ There, there, Sweetie Pie,’ Lucas patted her back. ‘Did you know that you have just given me the most precious Christmas present?’

‘What’s that?’ asked a teary Charlotte , lifting her head from Lucas’s shoulder.

‘You.’ replied Lucas simply and smiled warmly at her.

They looked at each other and slowly his lips found hers. A truly blissful reunion on a wonderful Christmas Eve.
